With The Federation IV
Many years ago we were contacted by both Indiana Jones fans and hat collectors who wanted a genuine pre World War 2 fedora. Hats from this era were generally taller and had fuller crowns than the hats of today. Most were sold as "Open Crown" hats with the pre creased styles becoming more popular after WW2.
The Federation IV
The Hattery and Akubra Hats, together set about creating a new hat, selecting an older set of hat blocks we believe date back to the 1920's. Advice from Mark Cross (Indygear.com) and Steve Delk (Adventurebilt) the hat maker for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, have assisted with the final result. The blocks used for this hat are original wooden blocks made by Akubra Hats. They have no pre determined shape. At no stage do we make any claim that this hat is a replica of the Indiana Jones hat as used in the movies. This hat has been made on a set of older hat blocks, and has been left in an "open crown" state allowing customers to shape according to their desire.
Why the name The Federation
When we introduced the first model we needed a name. The year was 1998 - the Centenary of Federation in Australia, with many historical pictures published showing people in hats such as the one we created. Hence the name The Federation. Hatsdirect has been at the forefront of offering "Open Crown" style hats into the collectors market. The hat has been through 3 transitions since its introduction, introducing a contrasting ribbon, a dimensional cut brim, a better quality version. We have now introduced a new set of specifications and refinements based on feedback and customer requests and have logically arrived at The Federation IV. This hat has been selected by various movie houses and ad agencies wanting a true to period hat style. It has also been used by various musicians.
The Federation IV Open Crown (as shipped)
Open Crown refers to a hat shape which has not been determined. Depending on the depth and amount of taper in a crown "block" a hat will be suited to shape as a Fedora, a Western style, a country style and so on. The shape of a hat is often referred to as the bash, and often all that was ever done to shape a hat was a simple bash using ones hands. Today, most hats come "pre creased" to give any of the looks we have become accustomed to.

This hat can take on a number of styles including a look similar to the Indiana Jones hat and other hats from that era. The color is Dark Brown otherwise known as Loden in Akubra Hats. Other colours have been added to the Fed IV family including Black, Carbon Grey (Standard), Heritage Fawn (Deluxe), Moonstone & Tawny Fawn (Standard)
The Federation IV (standard) Made from Akubra Imperial Quality felt. The finish on the standard Federation is the same as it has been, we have decided to keep the hat as low priced as possible, offering what we believe is one of the best value "open crown" hats available on the market. Akubra have built their reputation on the Imperial Quality felt, by comparing it to the deluxe model, in no way should this be regarded as an inferior product. For those commencing hat wearing and open crown hats we recommend this as the ideal starting point.
The Federation Deluxe IV Made from Akubras Heritage Grade felt. (Click here for Felt Quality page.) The leather sweat band is a higher quality leather, specially processed for these hats. It is softer and less prone to drying out and shrinkage compared to the regular Federation. It makes up a proportion of the price increase over the regular Fed. The Deluxe undergoes further finishing over the normal Heritage range resulting in a much smoother finish than the previous model.
Is the Federation hat a replica of The Indiana Jones Hat?
No. We do not make any claim as such and leave that judgement to others. We understand there are a number of minor differences including the felt used, the shade, the ribbon quality and other refinements. As many of our hats are sold to Indiana Jones fans we are of course sensitive to requests they make regarding the specifications of the hat. The hat is made for Hatsdirect (The Hattery) by Akubra Hats to our specifications and is not available through other outlets. This is the case for other exclusive styles we offer.
Do you custom style the Federation IV?
Yes and no. We have custom styled Fed IVs on show in the shop. We are happy to sell these styled hats to customers if they like the displayed styling, otherwise we sell the open crown hats as shipped. We do not custom shape hats for mail order.
I have heard the color can vary from hat to hat?
There can be a little variation from batch to batch but the variation is very marginal. Colors pictured on various forums often have little to do with reality and the variations seen are more to do with cameras and the photographer. We simply do not ship substandard hats.
What size should I order?
The Federation is blocked with virtually no taper. The Federation IV is slightly smaller than the previous model, if anything making the fit better. We have specific size instructions here. Customers who follow our instructions rarely have problems. We check all hats prior to shipping. No hat is sent out via mail order unless it is measuring true. Hats which are not measuring true do happen, we sell these in our shop where we can match a hat to a head size more accurately. We often can assist a customer with a more precise fitting if requested, or adjust a hat a little if required. If you are not sure ask us, we are available to help and do not mind taking time to get an order right.
